The start of a new year is the perfect time to reassess your relationship with food and see if there are any little tweaks and changes you could make to ensure you lead as healthy a life as possible.
Chances are that you could certainly stand to increase the amount of vitamin D in your diet, particularly given recent research from the University of Surrey suggesting that more needs to be done in order to increase awareness of the importance of this particular vitamin and the issues surrounding vitamin D deficiencies among younger healthy populations in this country.
Vitamin D is essential for bone health as it helps to regulate the amount of phosphate and calcium in our bodies, but it’s thought that about one in five people have low levels of vitamin D.
So how can you go about increasing the amount of vitamin D you’re getting? Yes, you can get out and about in the sunshine – if there is any – but you’re not going to get all that you need from sunlight between the months of October and March because the UV rays aren’t strong enough.
This means you’ve got to look to your diet to see if there are any improvements that could be made. Luckily, produce with vitamin D in it is all quite tasty so you’ll have fun including it more and more, stocking up on the likes of fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, orange juice, soy milk, cheese, eggs… come up with some recipes of your own if you’re feeling creative and see how you get on!
