The coming year promises to be a busy and diverse one for weddings, after all the disruption wrought by the pandemic over the last few years. As couples have plenty of time for planning and preparation, it has also afforded the opportunity to break with tradition, and bring in some new and innovative ideas. This includes a cake makeover! Here’s a look at some new trends.
1. Smaller cakes
As weddings were limited in size over the past two years, the big tiered cake fell out of fashion. Instead, smaller decorated layer cakes were in demand, which makes sense. According to Elle Magazine, the trend for so-called micro weddings is here to stay, as couples wake up to the benefits of a more intimate gathering.
2. Strong exotic colours
Traditionally, wedding cakes are white. However, with so many changes taking place in the world, old ways are being ditched for the new and exciting. This is reflected in the choice of more unusual colours for the cake, such as black, with gold or metallic piping. Others are going for optimistic pinks and blues to lend a pop of colour to the proceedings.
3. Asymmetrical shapes
Unusually proportions cakes are in fashion, with off-kilter layers or height contrasts. This is one for boho-style weddings, where neat uniformity could look out of place.
4. Individual cakes
A trend that took off in the age of uncertainty was mini-iced wedding cakes, served up as individual portions. This made it easier to plan for an occasion where numbers changed suddenly. They are also a great idea if you want a main cake that is just one or two layers, and need to have some extras on standby in case there isn’t enough to go around.
5. Flower or animal designs
Pet portraits are becoming more popular, as fur babies are now treasured members of the family in many households. Floral designs are also on-trend, either using edible pressed flowers, or sugar-based confections.
