Japandi is not a brand new trend, it has been on most interior designers’ radars for some time. But the minimalist style that combines the ‘hygge’ feel of Scandinavian design and the natural materials and wooden furniture of Japanese interiors is due to make a big splash in 2021.
Real Homes reports that Pinterest’s end of year report shows that Japandi is one of four home trends that will be big next year. So how can you bring it into your home?
Think functional furniture, minimalist layouts and natural raw materials like clay and wood, as well as a focus on sleek lines, neutral colour schemes and calming setups.
The living room
Begin by decluttering your home, and focus on a few select statement pieces of furniture. Aim for a rustic feel with dark wood, including accessories, shelves and bookcases. The Japandi colour palette features muted tones of pink, blue, and minty green over a base of white or grey. Decorative items such as vases or bowls can inject a pop of bright colour.
Keep furniture simple with clean lines and neutral tones and accessorising ‘mindfully’ – only introduce necessary elements, for example, a simple coffee table book, woven baskets for keeping throws or clutter away.
The kitchen
If you want to bring the Japandi trend to your kitchen, there are simple ways to do this without having to fork out on new units. For a quick and inexpensive way to update your kitchen, swap chrome fittings for brass or copper ones instead.
Japandi interiors look to embrace the natural by bringing the outdoors in, so incorporating a selection of plants into your kitchen is a great way to nail the trend. The interiors here are all about natural materials too.
