When you come to redesign your bathroom – whether for mobility or aesthetic purposes – it can be easy to leave things in the same layout. After all, it can be difficult to visualise having your bath on the other side of the room, or moving the shower to a different corner when you’re so used to it the way it is.
But if you want to install a new mobility bathroom that really suits your space and your personality, it could be worth doing something a little more drastic.
Before you jump into your redesign project though, you might want to take note of some of the advice from a couple of bathroom design experts.
Speaking to Real Homes, vice president of design at Grohe Michael Seum and internationally renowned trend expert Gudy Herder offered their advice on how to approach a bathroom redesign.
So, where do you start when you’re planning to change this part of your home? According to Ms Herder, the best place to begin is by creating a mood board for your space.
Think about the overall mood you’d like to create in the bathroom and how this fits in with the rest of your home. You should also think carefully about what you want to use your bathroom for. “The bathroom is increasingly turning into a “me” space – a place of retreat,” she asserted.
Mr Seum, meanwhile, says that you should begin by imagining yourself in your bathroom and asking yourself one question: “What appeals to me emotionally?”
“The entire bathroom concept is built from this starting point. There is no right or wrong choice of colour – the only thing that matters is that the result should be harmonious,” he stated.
He added that a starting point can be anything from a light fitting to a specific colour, but that deciding on this is essential before you go further with the process.
Colour is becoming increasingly important in bathrooms. Gone are the days of all-white suites and plain tiles. People are becoming more adventurous again in their bathroom design choices.
Ms Herder explained that design choices are becoming more personal, with fewer people simply copying a fixed theme.
“The focus now goes back to the person and their own current life situation: is my daily life too hectic that I want my home to be quiet and cosy? Or do I want to feel energised and stimulated in my home?,” she said.
She also noted that social media is opening people’s eyes to the various colour combinations that are possible in bathrooms and that can look stunning. This inspiration can help people be more adventurous with their own choices.
If you’re not in a position where you can overhaul the bathroom in your home, but you want to give it a quick refresh, Truro Daily News recently offered some tips for revamping your bathroom on a budget.
The first is to simply have a good clear out and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. The next is to change your shower curtain. Pick something with an interesting pattern or a bold colour if you want to make more of a statement.
