It’s all about living as sustainably as we can these days, as the impact that human activity is having on the planet becomes an increasingly stark reality.

Have a read of the IPCC report on climate change if you want to see just how bad the situation is – but try not to be overwhelmed by what you discover… it also represents an opportunity to make some lifestyle changes so you can reduce your own environmental footprint and start your own zero waste journey, as well.

There are all sorts of ways to become more sustainable, but one of the steps you can take to make an immediate difference is to review your fashion choices, how you shop and what you wear.

The environmental impact of the fashion industry is huge, with European Parliament stats showing that 79 billion cubic metres of water was used by the sector in 2015, that 0.5 million tonnes of microfibres are released into the ocean each year through washing synthetics and that ten per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions is down to clothing and footwear production.

Of course, you don’t want to compromise on style in order to go green with your closet – and there’s no reason that you should have to.

Being more sustainable with your buying can mean choosing different types of fabric (vegan silk and natural superfine wools are both great options), and shopping for independent luxury clothes to build a capsule wardrobe full of good-quality garments that will stand the test of time and never go out of style.

A capsule wardrobe can see you ditch fast fashion for good, editing it down so you only have your very favourite clothes hanging up, ones that fit your body and suit your particular lifestyle. The idea is that you will soon find yourself shopping less often and with a greater level of intent, with clothes that work season by season and for years to come.

If you need any help or advice putting your capsule wardrobe together, get in touch with the Distinctively Me team so we can discuss women’s bespoke tailoring and our made-to-measure service, which can change your view of both your clothes and your body.
