The government has announced that new restrictions will be imposed on the exportation of certain drugs in a bid to deal with supply shortages because of manufacturing problems.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has confirmed that restrictions will be in place on the export of all variations of HRT products in a bid to prevent some wholesalers from parallel exporting, which is when medicines are purchased for UK patients but then sold on for higher prices in other countries – which can cause supply problems.
In all, 19 drugs will be subject to these restrictions to make sure that alternatives are available for the drugs that are in short supply. Similar measures have also been implemented in other countries, including Spain and France.
The DHSC has been working with affected suppliers to keep an eye on the situation and reduce the impact on patients. Holders of wholesale dealer licences have also been informed that the government will use its powers to prevent parallel exporting of drugs for UK patients.
Matt Hancock, health and social care secretary, said he knows how distressing it can be to be faced with medicine shortages and as such, it’s “absolutely crucial” that people can always enjoy safe access to effective treatments.
“The new measures we’re introducing today will help us ensure patients get the medicines they need and the high-quality care they deserve. Helping the NHS is a priority for this government, and people should be fully reassured that we will always act to ensure that there is an adequate supply of the medicine you need,” he added.
The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry welcomed the news, with director Dr Rick Greville saying that the move will mean stockpiles of medicines that firms have built up over time will be better protected and available to the NHS patients for whom they were originally intended.
It was observed that manufacturers are aware that shortages can be very worrying for those affected by them and, as such, they do all they can to prevent problems from occurring, as well as resolving them as fast as they can if they do take place.
If shortages do crop up, companies have to notify the DHSC, which will then work with stakeholders to resolve the issues quickly following tried and tested procedures.
Manufacturers should also get in touch with the department directly if they feel that any of their medicines are being parallel exported and which could mean that supply problems arise in the UK. The name of the medicine, the concerns and evidence – if any – provided to help support the concerns.
