The majority of Brits spend months looking forward to their holiday, which is why it is not surprising that many of us use our vacation as a chance to let our hair down and enjoy ourselves.

This could explain why more than two-thirds (68 per cent) of Brits think they pile on the pounds while they are on holiday, according to recent research by Admiral Travel Insurance, the Express revealed.

Indeed, 77 per cent of holidaymakers eat more on vacation than normally, whether they enjoy an all-inclusive trip abroad or a caravanning getaway in the UK.

The findings also revealed 40 per cent believe food is a huge part of their enjoyment when they are on holiday, and over two-thirds regard food and drink to be the most important consideration when picking a trip.

Head of travel insurance at Admiral Cosmin Sarbu said: “Indulging in rich foods and snacks is part of the holiday experience.”

It was added: “Holidays are an opportunity for hard-working Brits to take time to relax, unwind and enjoy themselves.”

As a result, Brits typically eat an extra 8,750 calories while on holiday, amounting to an additional 1,250 calories per day for a seven-day trip.

This is why 17 per cent claim they gain two to three pounds while away, while 14 per cent admit to putting on four to five pounds.

Many of us might think we deserve to indulge while on a break, after ABTA – The Travel Association recently revealed a quarter of people would rather deny themselves food compared with 13 per cent who would prefer to cut back on holidays to save money, reported Travel Weekly.
