If you are looking to spruce up your home this year with dreamweaver cushions and leather coasters, then you will be interested in the latest trends news.
Every year Pinterest makes trend predictions based on the patterns it sees for certain searches. Areas that are receiving a significant uplift in searches on the social media platform are considered to be indicative of future trends.
This year has been no different with Pinterest releasing its trends predictions for 2020 in December of last year.
So just what are the trends we can look forward to this year?
- Beyond binary
The first trend area has been labelled ‘beyond binary’ by Pinterest and encompasses the growing interest in unisex and androgynous looks. Most of the search terms are focused on children with gender-neutral names (301% uplift), play rooms (75%), clothes (119%) and parties (35% increase). Unisex nursery gender neutral saw a 527% increase in the number of searches over the past year so consider this when kitting out your children’s rooms.
- Conspicuous consumption
Or quite the opposite actually. Eco-friendly consumption has been the focus growing interest in the past year so consider this when planning any interior design or home improvements.
Searches for thrift store crafts saw a 2,276% boost in the past year, while thrifted home décor had a 308% boost. Second hand fashion saw a 38% boost in searches too. Savvy buyers will match good quality new buys with charity shop purchases for a unique, smart look.
Pinterest thinks this trend is here to stay pointing out 81% of people strongly agreed that companies should help improve the environment, according to a recent a Nielsen study.
- Finding balance
Your home is your sanctuary and should be the focus of keeping on top of this trend. Feng Shui décor is having a revival (along with a lot of 90s trends, but more about that later), with a 137% increase in searches in the past year.
Scent your home with ylang ylang oil (91%) and put on some mood booster tunes (85%) and you should be away with living this trend.
- Space everything
This is another one for the kids, and the big kids too! Astrology-themed parties (247% increase in searches over the past year), Two the moon parties (289%) for your two-year old, and galaxy birthdays (341%) have all trended in the past year. Similarly, constellation crafts (102%) have proved popular.
- Internationally inspired
Looking abroad for inspiration has never gone out of fashion, but we are in for a huge surge in a number of international interior design fads in the coming year. Spanish-look bathrooms saw a 309% increase in searches in the past year, alongside Indian living rooms (2080%)
- Home hub
Finally, the one that brings it all together. This marries up the call for balance with the trends for eco consumption and home-based family activity. Investing in your home has never been so on trend as it is this year!
